Alleged forgery: ICPC begins probe of N' Assembly Clerk

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has begun to probe the allegation of forgery brought against the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Nasir Arab.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has begun to probe the allegation of forgery brought against the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Nasir Arab.

Already, his case has been referred to the legal department of the commission for proper advice and he may be summoned to appear the anti-graft body this week.
Daily Sun learnt that the petition against the Clerk was last Friday moved to the legal department in line with the commission's procedure on petitions against public officers.
Arab was accused of falsifying his service record in an alleged bid to remain in office beyond the retirement period of 35 years.
His curriculum vitae had allegedly been taken off the website of the National Assembly following media reports on the alleged forgery.

The ICPC is acting on a petition brought by the Human Rights, Justice and Peace Foundation.
Its National Chairman, Comrade Chidi Nwosu who signed the petition claimed that an independent investigation by the group confirmed the allegations against Arab on Thursday called on the ICPC to probe allegation of forgery against the Clerk.

The petition read: 'We are amazed to read newspaper reports that from May 26th, 2008, detailing allegation that the current holder of that office, Alhaji Nasir Arab has forged his service record to help him stay in office beyond the mandatory period of 35 years. We have since undertaken our independent investigation of these reports and found the allegation to be true."

'Sir, we are using this opportunity to call upon your commission to immediately probe into this unwholesome act, so as to redeem the image of our legislature, which you will agree with us has been more than soiled in the last eight years.
'As our investigation has confirmed, the CNA started work as a primary school teacher in Kaduna State in 1972 and rose to become a secondary school teacher, a principal, a principal education officer, the public relations officer of the Ministry of Education and was named as Commissioner for different Ministries until he transferred his service to the National Assembly in 1991."
